A fire door is a fundamental component in providing fire protection internally within buildings and are referred to as “passive fire protection systems”. They form part of specially constructed walls to provide fire protection barriers. Along with the wall itself, each door has a fire rating which is known as a fire-resistant level (FRL).
“Fire-door” is the everyday term used when referring to these special doors, however they are technically called a “fire-resistant-doorset”. This is because the door consists of many different sections in order to be classified as a fire-door. These sectors consist of a door frame and door leaf along with other accompanying hardware including vision panels, air grills, closers, locks, handles and corresponding fire door tags on both the door and doorframe. A fire door also needs to be self-closing and self-latching.
These doors are installed to provide safe passage for building occupants through fire resistant walls in the event of a fire. When the door is closed and latched, it will restrict the spread of toxic gases, smoke, flames and the additional effects of fire.
There are some fire doors that are held open using magnetic devices. These are designed to close automatically in the event of a fire once a fire alarm system, smoke detector or sprinkler system is activated. However, most fire doors are required to be closed at all times. The opening and closing of fire doors needs to be unimpaired by things such as door wedges, chocks or any other obstacles. For more information on security doors, visit: download this Information Sheet which outlines specific details with regard to these requirements.
Queensland Development Code (QDC) MP 6.1 requires prescribes fire safety installations for buildings to be maintained by suitably qualified persons such as those employed by Acura Developments / Bishop Doors. This maintenance is required at intervals that are sufficient to ensure the fire safety installations within the building perform to no less of a standard than what they were initially required to meet. QDC MP 6.1 schedule 1 makes reference to specific scheduling of maintenance which must be adhered to in order to comply to the code.
Under the Building Act 1975, all buildings that were approved after 1 April 1976 require tags to be fitted to fire doors. Tags are also required for all fire doors that have been replaced after 1 April 1976.
Unless required by a local authority at the date of approval, buildings approved prior to this date are not required to have their fire doors tagged.
All hardware components of a fire door combine to form the crucial elements in determining and achieving the overall FRL to which the fire door is certified and complies to. Hardware components of a fire door are required to have regular testing and approval performed by a registered testing authority such as Acura Developments / Bishop Doors.
There are other components which, when requiring installation or repair work, can have the work performed by a locksmith. These include closers, locks, hinges, seals, etc. These components are exempt from the building work definition and as such, no licence is required.
Signage is to comply to the legislative requirements that were applicable at the time when the building was approved. However, Acura Developments / Bishop Doors operate in line with the QFES which recommends all signage be installed to meet the current Building Code of Australia (BCA); Part D2.23 which stipulates all currently required fire door signage.
