When you have the luxury of a back yard, it is important that you take advantage of the space, both for your own pleasure and the sake of your house value.
There are a number of ways to achieve this, including adding a permanent structure to the yard.
Unfortunately, many people get confused when trying to decide between Patios and Verandahs, while others do not understand the differences between the two.
Outdoor patios are made using hard materials, often tiles of bricks. These patios can range from small areas to grand structures, depending on the space and desire of the owner. However, verandahs are always defined as covered areas attached directly to the main building, with some form of permanent or retractable roof like Solarspan (SolarSpan® & InsulRoof® )
Therefore, when deciding between Patios and Verandahs, you must first ask yourself what your prime needs and desires are. For example, a roofed verandah would be the best choice for those who want some shade from the sun. In order to achieve this, you would first have to judge where the sun rises and sets, designing the verandah around those facts. Verandahs can also extend out the rear of the house and around the side, providing you have the room.
Patios can often be described as more versatile options as you can create any shapes you desire, across multiple levels. Verandahs have roofs and so require supports which render them less versatile. When designing a patio, think about the size you desire and where it would go with regards to your property. If you have a larger garden, you may even want to build multiple patios to enjoy different areas within the space.
Once again, if you have the space, you may not even have to choose between Patios and Verandahs, as you can build both! This would give you a versatile patio for barbecues and the like, as well as a shaded area to take a break from the sun. The best of both worlds!
The one reminder we are keen to make is that these structures are pretty permanent, so take your time when it comes to making the decision and the designs. Sketch out your plan, work out whether you want to add other fixtures such as flowerbeds etc. Just be sure that you know exactly where things are going before you sink any money into the project.
