As we draw towards the close of what has been a difficult 2020 across the world, we wanted to take the time to reflect on some of the most popular kitchen design trends of the year. Your kitchen likely represents the largest investment you will ever make in your house, so it is important to get everything right, with both functionality and appearance in mind. Without further ado, here are the kitchen design trends of 2020:
The new year brought with it a fresh new colour palette that was far more adventurous than 2019, introducing some added brightness to the kitchen scene. Contrasting colours was also a theme of 2020, with dark benchtops and light walls as a prime example. White went out the window this year, replaced by sea-inspired palettes such as blue and green. However, one of the most popular choices of the year was violet, which we will likely see even more of moving forward. Mixing and matching was certainly the go-to choice in 2020.
Across 2020, many people opted to install dark coloured benchtops to contrast the rest of their kitchens. We also noticed smaller and thinner benchtops, opening up the room and taking a cleaner look with straighter edges. Laminate remained the top choice for benches, while oak timbers were also popular. With regards to handles, shark fin finishes are coming in.
In 2020, it was the battle of drawers against cupboards, and the former certainly won! Deeper drawers allow for large-item storage, as well as being versatile with the introduction of add-ons and organisers. Pulling out a drawer gives you access to the entirety of the storage, rather than having to dig around at the back of a cupboard without being able to see properly.
The most popular sink and tapware options in 2020 came in the form of stainless steel, black, and benchtop moulded. Motion sensor taps and hinged taps were also more popular than ever. Increased functionality is the trend here! Rose gold and black sink finishes were on-trend in 2020, as well as bronze-coloured taps. Earthy marble and stone were also popular options for sinks and splashbacks.
When it comes to cooking, cleaning, eating, and socialising in the kitchen, overhead lighting is an absolute key ingredient. It is also important to ensure that all storage space is well lit, allowing you to find everything with ease, with task lighting being the popular choice in these instances. Hanging lighting with pendants was a common choice for kitchen islands this year, while LEDs also increased in popularity as energy-saving options. LEDs also come in a wide range of colours, can save you money, and are extremely versatile.
