Building a teenage retreat

Building a teenage retreat

Kids grow faster than you can imagine. When they grow into teenagers, they become eager to get their own space, clamoring for more privacy. The best way to give them that privacy is to build a teenage retreat. Some of the items needed to undertake such a project include furniture, storage, plumbing, accessories, powerpoints, and tech. Here is what you should know.

Teenage retreat options

You can decide to build your teenage retreat anyhow you want it. It depends on what you want. You can rejig your garage and make it suitable for your teenage children. Such an option is less expensive since it will not require you to build something entirely new. Another option is for you to convert your living area into a comfy room for your teens.

Building a granny flat is another fantastic way of creating a teenage retreat. Building a cabin at your home’s rear is also a fun way to accomplish the same goal. You can have these spaces designed by architects, or they can exist in kit formats. Regardless of the one you choose to go for, ensure all the necessary items like games area, sleeping area, study area, or small bathroom or kitchenette are included. It would be best if you also made sure the place has adequate insulation.

What to include in your teenage retreat

Don’t just get up and start to build a teenage retreat without making the right inquiries. Quiz your teens and find out what they would love to see in such a space. For instance, ask them the color they will prefer for the space, their choice of flooring, the kind of furniture, would they like a small-sized fridge for holding snacks and drinks, and if they like to have a toilet for themselves. After all, it is their space, not yours. So, let them decide what should be in the space.

Things that make up many teenage retreats are:

  • Furniture – go for large, comfortable couches that will sit a couple of friends. Beanbags make a great choice for larger gatherings. Teenage retreats are incomplete without entertainment units like a DVD player, gaming console, and TV. With side tables and coffee tables, your teens and their buddies can have somewhere to keep their drinks and food. They can also use a desk for holding their PC, which will help a teenager study more conveniently.
  • Accessories – you can allow your teens to take the lead here. Let them decorate the place anyhow they see fit. They should decide on the ornaments, artworks, posters, and every other thing.
  • Electricity – a professional electrician will help you with this task. Teenagers surely love to use a lot of power. You can be damn sure about that. Please make sure the teenage retreat has been properly wired, along with enough power supply to help them meet their needs.
  • Tech – you cannot do a teenage bedroom without installing a reliable internet connection. It is a must-have for them. They will struggle with their bedroom when they lack an internet connection. They need an Ethernet connection or good Wi-Fi signal to go online and get their home works done, as well as do any other thing teenagers do. It is also important that you are careful with the tech inside the bedroom. Addictive games such as Fortnite keep people occupied, and there are other dangerous things you should be wary of. Kidsbook has recently made it clear about video chat applications and online safety. They emphasized how children should be aware of what their kids are doing online.
  • Bathrooms and kitchenettes – a bathroom and kitchenette will give them that independent feeling. It would help if you made sure the plumbing is done correctly. That is why you need to be doubly sure you are hiring a licensed and qualified plumber for your toilet, shower, and basin installations. You may wish to leave out an oven and cooktop inside the teenage retreat; however, if you are hoping they can use a microwave, make sure you have a powerpoint for that and a fridge as well.
  • Soundproofing – I’m sure you are not prepared to deal with teenage noise. If I am right about that, include some soundproofing when you are building so that the environment will be habitable and quiet for everybody.
